Moreton Bay Marine Park (MBMP) Structural Adjustment Package Industry Submission for Review It has become painfully clear to industry that the buy-out has failed to remove fishing effort from the Marine Park. Early indications across all fisheries show there are just as many operators, if not more, working in the Bay since the new zoning arrangement came into effect on 1 March 2009. In late March, MBSIA members met with lawyers, Law Essentials, to discuss options for class action against the Queensland State Government regarding the failure of the Structural Adjustment Package. As an outcome of that meeting and as recommended by Law Essentials, members agreed to first lobby the State Government with a detailed submission, documenting how the buy-out has failed. The collation of the submission will be done by Law Essentials with some assistance from MBSIA. Details for the reasoning behind a submission can be found under this menu of the website. Like you, MBSIA wants this submission to be presented to the State Government as soon as possible. The next page has an overview of the timeline for the submission to be compiled and delivered. Please note that this timeline is dependent on how quickly data is collected from both fishers and DPI&F. The first step to achieving the submission is for fishers to register their participation. If MBSIA does not receive enough interest from industry, MBSIA cannot facilitate this submission. The Association is not in a financial position to fully fund this submission and cannot act if industry does not show support and commitment. All fishers are urged to register and participate in this submission. All success achieved from this submission, and any further action will benefit the local industry collectively, and it’s your responsibility to act collectively now. Not only will it be cheaper for each of you individually if more people register, but, more importantly, it presents a united, industry driven front to the State Government. The register form must be returned to the MBSIA office by Wednesday, 27 May. To complete the online register, click here or go to the Member menu at the top. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call to discuss on 07 3868 1125.
